Sporties Taree (formerly Taree Leagues Sports Club), once a humble single-green bowling club nestled in the growing Chatham area of the Manning Valley, is now a sprawling complex of bowling greens, an auditorium, function rooms, a bar, and a wonderful restaurant.

Its journey began in 1963...

In the Beginning...

The Club began in 1963 with the forming of Tattersalls Bowling Club, operating from a building located at 68 Chatham Avenue, which Taree Medical Centre now occupies. The framework of the bowling green can still be seen at the site.

The Opening...

The first rollup was in October 1965 and officially opened on 22 April 1967. The Club struggled financially and following a special meeting in 1969, it was decided they would amalgamate with Group 3 Rugby League. The new entity became known as the Group 3 Leagues Club.

The Amalgamation...

Following the amalgamation, the Club began to prosper and in 1977 the opportunity arose to purchase the current site at 43 Cowper Street, which had previously been occupied by ECN 8 TV. The building was subsequently transformed into a club with three bars, a dining room and two bowling greens.

The Name . . .

On occasions when the Club’s sporting teams represented outside the district, the obvious question always arose, “Where’s Group 3?”, so the Club’s name was changed to Taree Group 3 Leagues Club.

A further name change was approved by members to align with the Club’s objective of promoting all sports. Following this decision, the Club was named Taree Leagues Sports Club.

The Refit . . .

A major refit in 2000 resulted in a modern clubhouse with excellent facilities, including two bowling greens, full bar facilities, Keno and TAB. Further renovations in 2005 and again in 2006 resulted in the extension of the main auditorium and the creation of a poker machine room, outdoor balconies and a downstairs function room.

The Here and Now . . .

The club is now known as “Sporties Taree” after it officially became the sister club of Taree Aquatic Club after gaining approval from NSW Liquor & Gaming from 1 st May 2026.

Sporties Taree is located at the northern end of Taree, in the suburb of Chatham, among a large residential area and close to the Taree Recreation Centre, which is made up of sporting fields. We provide a welcoming, relaxed atmosphere coupled with exceptional service from friendly, attentive staff members.
